This was my first ever oil painting and demonstrates my ability to work with different materials and complex shapes and lighting. The colors and objects in this composition are nostalgic for me, reminiscent of Slavic culture and traditions. I set this still life up using objects I brought with me from my grandmother in Ukraine. I felt that it was symbolic for me to paint these objects, paying homage to her and the things she did in life to support my family and help me to be here.
